Anthony Burgess (1917-93) served in the Education Corps in the Second World War, and later worked as a teacher. During his stationing in Malaysia and Borneo with the Colonial Service at the time of the independence Movement, he began writing A Malayan Trilögy (published in Penguin as The Long Day Wanes) and Devil of a State. Anthony Burgess's autobiography was written in two volumes: Little Wilson and Big God (1987), from which Childhood is taken, and You've Had Your Time (1990).
