The peaceable kingdom,The Holy Experiment 1754-1755
The Children of the Light had been born; now came the Holy Experiment.
In 1681 a group of Quakers, led by William Penn, had sailed to America. There it was that they eventually founded their first settlement in what is now the city of Philadelphia. The community grew and prospered; some made vast fortunes and raised large families; they lived in considerable comfort and employed slaves. They made pacts with the Indians. They subdued the wilderness and turned it to their own uses.
But with wealth had come difficulties. Success bred complacency and the aims of the founders came to be eroded and ignored. And it was only through pain that many discovered that the quality of living can so often be more important than the standard of life.
