A Companion to the Prophetic Books of The Old Testament
The Old Testament prophets are mysterious figures, poets who speak out of Israel's ancient past yet have a message of challenge and hope for
today's world. The prophets' task was to bring God's word and will to bear on their own society, threatened as it often was by external danger and internal conflict. The passing years have not diminished the impact of their message and God still speaks to us through them.
The prophetic books cover a long period of time from the eighth century BC to perhaps the second century BC, years in which Israël suffered with the trauma of deportation and the adjustments of repatriation, only to be overrun again by a foreign power.
This is a volume designed to be read alongside the prophetic books, a help to understand these ancient scriptures for our own day. Based on material previously published in BRF's Guidelines Bible reading notes, Prophets and Poets offers a series of guides to these Old Testament writings, together with new introductory material and several short general articles.
